Nearly 10,000 representatives from 2,000 enterprises and institutions participated in the 11th China Internet Audio and Video Convention held in Chengdu, Sichuan province from March 28-30, sharing their insights into the opportunities and transformation facing the industry.

Focusing on international communications, the convention features multiple forums themed around micro and short dramas, Chinese cities' international communications and exchanges, and key opinion leaders on social media.

It is designed to better leverage the role of online video and audio content to tell China's stories and make China's voice heard, organizers said.

The 2024 China Internet Audio and Video Development Report was released during the event, which showed that Chinese online audio and video content has become an important driving force for international communications.

According to the report, the overseas downloads of Chinese major long-video app platforms had exceeded 300 million by 2023, while that of audio apps reached 3.8 million.

When it comes to the export of online audiovisual content, efforts should be made not only on content creation and distribution channels, but on technologies, said Han Zhijie, vice-president of Tencent Video, one of the leading Chinese streaming platforms.

"We are trying to utilize intelligent technologies to facilitate cultural exchanges and promote Chinese culture worldwide," Han said.

So far, WeTV, the overseas version of Tencent Video, has been downloaded more than 200 million times, according to Han.

Chinese micro and short dramas have seen leapfrog growth in recent years.

The short episodes, often lasting only a few minutes, have clear themes and storylines, and a combination of chronological and reverse narrative styles, leading to a surge in their popularity.

"We have adapted some domestic popular short dramas and created overseas versions accordingly. In Brazil, these dramas are increasingly favored by local residents," Liu Zhen, vice-president of the short-video sharing platform Kuaishou, said at the convention.

The micro and short dramas' overseas market is estimated to hit $10 billion by 2027, according to Wu Kelei, head of overseas operations in Dianzhong Tech.

In terms of mainstream media outlets, they have been committed to establishing an integrated media system to strengthen their international communication capability.

Among them, the Sichuan International Communication Center launched an international communication program during the event, which will help Chinese enterprises and cities "go global" based on its intelligent algorithm-driven platform.

In addition, the center has established the PandaGuide international communication studio in collaboration with People's Daily Online; and signed a memorandum of cooperation with the School of Journalism at Fudan University in Shanghai.

The local television station— Chengdu Radio and Television— has built an international communication team named Chengdu Plus, which now operates seven accounts on social media platforms including Facebook, X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram.
